Nurses
The Royal Australian Mint released a new coin series titled Australia Remembers ahead of ANZAC Day which pays tribute to past and present Australians who played important roles during times of war, conflict and peacekeeping.
The first coin released in the Australia Remembers series honours past and present Australian Service nurses.
This series acknowledge and recognise the efforts made by everyday Australians during times of war, conflict and peacekeeping. Along with our servicemen and women who played such an important role, so too did many other Australians, whether on our soil or abroad, such as Australian Service nurses.
Astronomy
Launched on Friday November 7, 2008. The Mint joined with the Canberra Astronomical Society to create a night of star-gazing in celebration of the 2009 year set theme which commemorates the International Year of Astronomy (IYA). An amazing light show of local astronomer's photography was also projected across the walls of the Mint building.
The twenty cent coin design makes a direct link with the vision of IYA; community involvement. This coin design features three stargazers observing the night sky.
With the theme The Universe, Yours to Discover, the International Year of Astronomy 2009 is an initiative of the International Astronomical Union and is endorsed by the United Nations and UNESCO.
