20 cents 2010 Volunteers Australia

A commemorative coin was launched to celebrate the United Nations 10th anniversary of International Year of Volunteers. Volunteers make a significant social and economic contribution to the Australian community.

The Minister for Social Inclusion Tanya Plibersek and the Parliamentary Secretary for Community Services Julie Collins made the announcement while meeting with Babana Aboriginal Men's Group, a volunteer-run support group, in Sydney.

The 2011 volunteer grants will support more than 200,000 people across Australia who give their time, energy and expertise to volunteering every day.

To help give back to these volunteers, 2011 volunteer grants were targeted towards organisations that helped disadvantaged individuals, families and communities, particularly those affected by recent natural disasters.

The 20 cents coins was a reminder to all Australians of the significant role that volunteers play in local communities. The coin features a ring of volunteers around the outside edge while the centre of the coin features the IYV+10 logo.

Rolled coins were available from the Mint for $14.00 each.

The 2011 anniversary provided a platform to discuss how volunteerism could contribute to solving pressing global issues, such as poverty, conflict, humanitarian crises, and climate change. It emphasized that volunteerism is not just about local community service but is a powerful force for peace and development on a global scale.

The European Union also designated 2011 as the European Year of Volunteering, which aligned with and amplified the goals of the UN's initiative.

A major highlight of IYV+10 was the launch of the first-ever "State of the World's Volunteerism Report" (SWVR) on December 5, 2011, which is also International Volunteer Day. This report provided a global overview of volunteerism, its impact on social and economic development, and its role in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It was a significant step in providing data and evidence for the value of volunteer work.
